Textures in home decoration

We attach more and more importance to the time we spend at home which is why we tend to increasingly invest in making the home a place of comfort and personality.

Among the trends emerging in relation to interior decoration are a wish to contact with nature, the need to do away with what is not indispensable  and a desire for a more sustainable life style which is why, on this occasion we shall highlight three avantgarde decoration style so that everybody can choose what best suits their tastes and needs:

Minimalism

“Less is more” never goes out of fashion particularly in large cities in which living space is usually reduced and one has to make the best of it. To this end, textures that do not generate friction, diaphanous and ordered spaces are used to create havens of peace. Simple, comfortable and functional furniture, surrounded by smooth surfaces bathed, if possible, in natural light. These three points are key to keep in mind:

  • Furniture: Keep only what is indispensable. Discard everything that is of no use in order to gain more space. Aim at being functional and use only what is necessary.
  • Decoration: A minimalist style does not necessarily mean doing without all accessories, but discretion is key to affording balance to the home and maintaining harmony: simple lamps, one or two pictures or one or two works of sculpture…
  • Colours: Neutral colours prevail in minimalist spaces which seek to maintain the balance in the space inhabited. Whites, creams, light greys, and if you are looking for some contrast, you can choose to mix lighter tones of cream with coffee colours or whites with dark greys.

Connection with nature

Mimicking nature in our interior spaces is likewise a trend that never passes. The balance of textures and colours can help create a sensation of harmony which is organic and, consequently, does not feel strange to those living in the space or for those visiting, and affords freshness and a sensation of wellbeing.

  • Furniture: This style calls for handcrafted furniture or items with natural finishes. Clearly, wood takes centre stage.
  • Decoration: Integrating organic elements, such as plants, and if seasonal, even better, into the different rooms of the home helps maintain this connection with nature. Using natural fibres like linen, cotton or esparto in decorative elements is a way to add harmonious and stylish textures.
  • Colours: The colours of wood, terracotta, and greenery will add a lot of life to communal rooms like living rooms. Using textures close to nature, with tile or materials made from clay or ceramics, will make your decoration more original and help maintain coherence with a style that evokes nature.

Eco-friendly

Concern about sustainability is likewise apparent in the decoration of our homes, with materials with low environmental impact in their production being favoured, together with ones having a greater guarantee of durability. Natural, recycled, handcrafted and even vintage articles can be accommodated in this style which continues to gain followers. The most common error to avoid is creating a fussy space, to which end these concepts are considered:

  • Furniture: Pieces made using sustainable processes, such as recycled or restored furniture. Wooden pallets can be converted into almost anything and the trend is to make the best use of them.
  • Decoration: Balance is key in order to create harmonious and relaxing space, but creativity is fundamental in order to achieve original settings. A good option is to use textiles made of PET material, that is, fibres obtained from recycled plastics and other waste materials, reprocessed into resistant, long-lasting elements. Similarly, not to be discarded are materials obtained from natural and renewable raw materials or the reuse of elements with a history that will afford an eclectic touch to the space.
  • Colours: In this case, the only rule is harmony. If you choose to integrate vintage elements in the decoration, look for balance between the space and the elements making it up. If you work with wood, nature’s colours will be your guide.

The home has evolved from just a place to sleep to becoming a shelter and the main place for people’s wellbeing and keeping in mind the current trends in decoration and adapting what best suits our tastes and needs will help us achieve this.
