Terrazzo is back

Marble pebbles, cement and a long life: terrazzo never leaves.

When fashion brings it back again, its resistance guarantees that it will remain in top shape. It is also a material to achieve infinite versatile finishes at a low cost – which makes it even more attractive.

This surface began to be used in Venetian homes in the XV century. By that time they used clays to mix the mixture of small pieces of marble – instead of cement. Therefore it has survived a quite a good number of trends in interior design, in competition with more avant-garde materials … and yet here it is.

Even although for many people to think of terrazzo floors reminds of their grandmother’s house, the truth is that right now it is an actual trend as never before. But including a touch of modernity that makes it much cooler.

New ideas for a timeless classic

Terrazzo is back. And now it’s also able to climb the walls or cover furniture – and even fashion. Countertops, bathtubs and vinyl replicating its unmistakable pattern are invading all parts of the house, even at shower curtains.

The truth is that it is a material that requires little maintenance and that resists humidity and chemical. So, it becomes a perfect option for public spaces and specially transited areas.

You can combine it on floors with darker surfaces to provide a style between retro and industrial – specially when using gray tones. The truth is, terrazzo has a timeless quality that always brings freshness on any combination.

More grains and colours

The most classic terrazzo is normally produced in natural tones: gray, beige or reddish. But today the colour possibilities are endless: even garish colours have been successfully added to the mix. The result is an attention-grabbing terrazzo using materials such as glass.

With large grained terrazzo the result is even more surprising: it is a reminiscence of animal print but with a cleaner touch. And is a truly surprising effect when we dare to use unexpected colours.

 Terrazzo in the furniture

Kitchen and bathroom sinks, outdoor furniture such as tables and flowerpots and also lamps join this trend. But terrazzo is frequently related to an utilitarian use, and forgotten concerning design.

This furniture has a reminiscent touch of the 70s or 80s – which should not be avoided at all. It should rather be incorporated into the most current trends, such as Biophilia. Mixed with plants or even iron forging with plants motifs, is able to create both current and vintage atmospheres at the same time.

Terrazzo prints

Small irregular stones have found their way at bedding, kitchen utensils and mobile phone cases: it is undoubtedly the trendiest pattern. Fashion did not missed the opportunity to use it in fresh creations with an innocent touch, in addition to its enormous kawaii potential when used with the right colours.
